Ian is Senior Solicitor at Kalra Legal Group (KLG) since 2020.

Ian graduated in Chinese from Balliol College, Oxford University in 1984 and then won a British Council Scholarship to one of China’s leading universities, Fudan, in Shanghai where he studied Modern Chinese Literature, obtaining a distinction.

He has since had a dual career as a translator of Chinese language legal financial and technical documents and then as a lawyer specialising in Employment and Discrimination Law.

He did the law conversion course at Manchester Metropolitan University and was offered a training contract with the “magic circle” City law firm Linklaters.

After leaving the City he worked for 9 years as a Legal Aid lawyer for trade union centre, a law centre, Citizens Advice and, acting mainly for employers, in private practice in the North East, specialising in Employment and Discrimination law.

He then did 2 years specialist equal pay litigation for Thompsons solicitors, a trade union firm and then, having been self employed as a translator, worked for 18 months for another trade union firm specialising again in Employment and Discrimination law, advice and litigation, before joining the Kalra Legal Group in May 2020.

Significant legal experience

  • Ian acted for Mr Visram in the Court of Appeal reported case of Visram v ICTS(Ltd) which was recently decided in Mr Visram’s favour, a case whose claim value is approximately £500,000.
  • He has acted in another reported Court of Appeal case which he recently settled for approximately £100,000.
  • Ian recently settled a multi-party claim for holiday and contractual bonus entitlements for £730,000 between 33 claimants.
  • He settled a whistleblowing claim for a claimant against a large public authority for two years’ salary, (£52,000).
  • He has acted for employers in successfully defending all heads of employment and discrimination claims and has obtained costs awards for both claimants and employers where the other side has acted unreasonably.
  • He has 12 years’ experience in disability discrimination and has won, settled or defended numerous claims. In November 2019 he won a reported disability discrimination case for a cancer sufferer for £68,000.
  • He has negotiated numerous exit packages for employees and executives.
  • He has advised and acted for Unison, the GMB and Unite the Union, the Prison Officers Association and the University and College Unions their legal officers and members.
  • He has acted successfully in cases of automatic unfair dismissal for asserting a statutory right, heath and safety automatic unfair dismissal, and pregnancy dismissals.
  • He is a successful Tribunal advocate and has represented both employers and employees in complex cases.
  • He achieved the re-instatement of a number of employees unfairly dismissed for alleged misconduct as well as a woman dismissed after suffering a miscarriage.
  • He was a specialist equal pay litigator for Thompsons solicitors where he recovered a total of £1,181,700 in a two year period.
  • He can advise employers Directors Service Contracts and employee contracts, on post termination restrictive covenants, trade secrets, non-dealing, non solicitation, non-poaching and garden leave clauses.
  • He can advise employers on the important preparation measures for making redundancies and TUPE transfers in including variation of employee contracts.

Ian has 12 years’ experience as a solicitor advocate in Employment and Discrimination Law. He has advised on an successfully brought or defended claims including contract law, unfair and wrongful dismissal, redundancy, TUPE, holiday, notice and sick pay, data protection, protective awards and compensation for failure to inform and consult on TUPE, whistleblowing and all heads of discrimination under the Equality Act. He was a specialist Equal Pay litigator at Thompsons solicitors for two years.

Personal Information

Ian is a serious student of the violin and loves all kinds of music from classical to the kind of bands who play at Glastonbury. He keeps fit by running or cycling most days and weight training.

Charitable activities

For 5 years Ian led the North East charitable music group Semitones which gave free concerts to people in care homes.

He has also done unpaid translation work for a well known charity.
