Taylor Review on Modern Employment Practices

Matthew Taylor recently published his much anticipated report on modern employment practices.

He was commissioned to conduct the review last year by the Prime Minister and in his report he calls for a fresh look to be taken at employment laws to make it easier for workers to understand and access their rights.

“Our national performance on the quantity of work is strong,” said Matthew Taylor. “But quantity alone is not enough for a thriving economy and fair society. We believe now is the time to complement that commitment to creating jobs with the goal of creating better jobs.”

“If we want citizens who are engaged, responsible, active, who – to coin a phrase – ‘take back control’ we should encourage those same virtues in the workplace,” he added. “Our idea of what it is to be a respected citizen should not stop at the office or factory door.”

In the report, Matthew Taylor sets out seven principles to address the challenges facing the UK. The adoption of these principles should support the ambition for “fair and decent work with realistic scope for development and fulfilment”.

The Law Society of England and Wales has welcomed the review, describing it as “a clarion call for meaningful reform of our employment laws”.

It says that the review has made wide-ranging calls to reform employment law including clarifying workplace rights, a larger role for government in cracking down on bad employers, and a fee-free way of determining employment status.
